Clearing Up Church Street in Partnership

September 1st, 2010

Church Street Neighbourhood Management has developed great relationships with the Princes Trust, Probation Service and Youth Offending Team and through this they take on projects to help improve the area. Some examples of work they have done in the past include:

« Painting Derry Hall « Painting a mural and clean up on Luton Street «Cleaning out the temporary library « Varnishing huts and painting tables and chairs at Glarys Court

Here at Neighbourhood Management, we make suggestions to the teams about where to work next. Some suggestions for future projects include:

« Clearing gardens on Fisherton Estate and Greenside « Painting MBS’ youth club « Painting the Blackwater Service Road

We believe this partnership between Neighbourhood Management, Princes Trust, Probation Service and Youth Offending Team is a win-win situation for everyone involved. The organisations win because we take on a lot of the organising of the projects, the owners of the areas win as they do not have to use their own resources – and most importantly residents win with an improved community space.

The types of work the teams can do include painting, cleaning and clearing. If you have an idea of where an area could be improved, please let us know.

The Living City Conversation: Can responsive services be engineered by personal responsibility?

August 21st, 2010

Living City Conversation

In line with Westminster’s new commissioning model whereby council departments have now switched to ‘delivery units’ allowing more focus on serving customers, a new initiative was launch this summer called the Living City Conversation.

In light of funding cuts across the public sector, people living in Westminster are encouraged to submit ideas on how the public services could be run.  With the support of the council you could help make a difference in your community.

The value for money plan aims to ensure that the council deliver excellent services during a period of intense financial pressure and increasing demand. There are over 200 voluntary groups in Westminster.

Have you got a realistic solution to a local need? Then why not be part of the conversation.

Living City Target:

  • 10 Living City Project by Dec 2010
  • 50 Living City Project by July 2011
  • 100 Living City Projects by 2012

For more information on how you can be part of the Living City Conversation visit: www.westminster.gov.uk/theconversation .

Just the right recipes for healthy eating success

August 9th, 2010

Church Street’s Cooking Challenge has a few more recipes to add to the menu. Summer is here so for a light dinner Kim Lee has suggested Steamed Fish with Ginger. This delicious dish could be a starter or a main course depending on the size of the fish – and the fish stalls on Church Street market have a great range on offer.

For the busy family, Mary Kim Mehlman recommends One Pot Chicken with Rice, and for a tasty but healthy desert why not try Jurgita Hammond’s Rice Pudding

We’d love to hear what you think of these dishes and if you send us photos of you making them we can put them up on the website!

Could you prevent a family member, friend or neighbour from falling over?

August 2nd, 2010

The Westminster Falls Prevention Service is looking for volunteers in the Church Street area who are interested in becoming ‘Falls Prevention Trainers’.

The Falls Prevention Service offers their clients (those who have or who are worried about falling over) a 12-week programme that includes group exercises, education and one-to-one support. The aim is to reduce falls and minimise the damaged caused by falls (e.g. confidence, broken bones, quality of life). As a volunteer you would learn ‘on the job’ how to encourage clients to do the exercises, the theory behind preventing people from falling, as well as assisting with one to one sessions, which could include escorting clients to and from the sessions.

As a volunteer you would need to commit to attending the sessions, which are three hours on Monday afternoons for 12 weeks starting 6 September at Church Street Library. Support will be offered from a Physiotherapist and Rehabilitation Assistant who will lead the first programme of 12 weeks. Ultimately, the Westminster Falls Prevention Team is looking for a group of people who could provide training in their local area.

For more information please contact Akua Annan, Falls Health Promotion Therapist on 020 7641 3960 or email akua.annan@westminster-pct.nhs.uk .
