Futures Plan – Planning Brief consultation

January 6th, 2012

Draft Planning Briefs have been produced for the first four potential development sites in the Futures Plan.  Planning Briefs set out what a developer can and cannot do on a site.  The draft briefs are now out for consultation for 6 weeks, finishing February 21.  Summaries of the documents are available online here, Cosway St Planning Brief , Lilestone St Planning Brief, Luton St Planning Brief, Parsons North Planning Brief or hard copies at the Church Street Neighbourhood Centre.  The full 70 page documents are available for reference  at the Neighbourhood Centre and the Church St Library or can be accessed on line at the council’s website which also explains how people can comment.  Following the consultation, final versions of the Planning Briefs will be agreed by the council and will then be officially called “Supplementary Planning Documents”.

For the larger two sites, Parsons North and Luton Street, there will also be public workshops where residents will have opportunities to share ideas with leading architects on how the sites could be developed.  Come along:

Luton Street   Date: 17th and 31st January at 6.15pm.   Venue: Play Centre, 12 Bledlow Close, Capland Street, NW8 8RT

Pet Society lights up Church Street

December 7th, 2011

Church Street was lit up today with Christmas lights and a 12 foot Christmas tree, courtesy of the Pet Society.  After losing all of last year’s grant, residents working with the Neighbourhood Centre decided to roll up their sleeves and set up the Pet Society to raise money to invest in their neighbourhood (as well as promoting more responsible pet ownership and giving people experience of a retail environment).  After a year of graft, nearly £7,000 proceeds has been raised to invest in local projects and Christmas lights was chosen overwhelmingly by local people for the first tranche of the money.  The lights were turned on by one of the volunteers, Brian Whittaker, who has personally dedicated over 400 hours of his time to the cause.  City West Homes provided a Santa’s Grotto to add the occasion which also included mulled wine and mince pies, and entertainment from Tanya’s dance crew and the Lisson Green choir.  The guest speakers were Councillor Jonathan Glanz, Cabinet Member for Housing and Murad Qureshi, GLA Assembly Member (and local resident).  Cllr Glanz said:

“This is a fantastic achievement and people should be proud of the Pet Society and all the hard work that has made this possible.”

The Design Team goes on a field trip

December 3rd, 2011

On the 2nd of December the Design Team crossed the town on a mission to view the latest trends in property development. They visited 6 new schemes in North, East and West London, some of which proved to be excellent examples and some pretty poor ones which will certainly not be brought back to Church Street. The team has scrutinised each of the properties and diligently recorded all the feedback which will be passed on to the appointed architect and create the baseline of the designing work.

Futures Plan Design Team

December 2nd, 2011

Westminster City Council has decided to build three “show-homes” on Orchardson Street to demonstrate the kinds of layouts, finishes and quality of the buildings to be expected in the future developments of the masterplan. In order to design those flats an enthusiastic and committed group of residents – the Design Team – have been put together to work alongside architects to input into the designs, using their experience of living in the area. The team aims to ensure the new homes fulfil the needs of local people. The Design Team has attended an introductory meeting and a field trip so far, to get a flavour of current design trends, and is currently awaiting appointment of an architect who will lead the project.

The Council’s cabinet has decided to go ahead with developing detailed plans for four of the proposed sites: Parsons North, Cosway Street, Luton Street and Lilestone Street.

They agreed that the other proposals are a good framework for future development in Church Street and Paddington Green, but they want to make progress with the first four sites before contemplating the rest in more detail.

A newsletter explaining this information and more, is being delivered to every household in the area but you can also read is by clicking here.

Church Street volunteers gloss over offensive bridge

July 6th, 2011

Last Friday residents of Lisson Green Estate were delighted to see a swarm of volunteers from the London Business School in Regent’s Park repainting the footbridge that spans the Regents Canal by their homes.

The condition of the bridge came to the attention of the Church Street Neighbourhood Centre and Westminster City Council due to the excessive amount of gang-related and offensive graffiti on it. At the same time the Business School approached the Neighbourhood Centre and offered their services as part of a team building exercise and to carry out positive work in the community.

Over 20 volunteers and staff from the Neighbourhood Centre and the council cleaned and removed the offensive graffiti – what an amazing difference their efforts have made!

If you have any other ideas of how volunteers can make a difference to Church Street please let us know!
